CD ROM, Inc. today announced the notice of allowance from the US patent and trademark office for their second patent on compression on CD-ROM and DVD discs. This patent, called the CRI-X3 patent, increases the company’s patent portfolio for awarded patents in three fields of science: audio processing of signals on optical media; compression and encryption of data on optical media; and security devices for the permanent destruction of sensitive and classified data on optical media.
The new patent claims cover processes for accessing compressed data on optical media, including both CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs. One of the allowed claims, for example, covers:
“.… A method for dynamically generating a file allocation table based upon files storage information on a CD-ROM for retrieving compressed files directly from the CD-ROM…”
CD ROM’s patented technology, currently being marketed under the trademark CRI-X3™, permits standard off-the-shelf or custom compression algorithms commonly used on a read-write magnetic media to be used effectively on read-only optical media. The technology offers at least two significant competitive advantages in the optical disc industry. First, the amount of information, which can be stored on the DVD, increases from a standard 4.7GB of data to an average three times that amount per platter. Second, access to the compressed data on the optical media speeds up in direct proportion to the compression ratio. A CD-ROM or DVD-ROM that has the CRI-X3™ code can be read at double or triple the normal data transfer rate. Compression rates have been achieved in excess of 128 times. This technology would be suitable for rapid burst transmissions of densely packed digital data.
